I walked those gardens where we met, a lifetime or was it two ago, holding your hand within my own, feasting on that gaze of yours, so full of trust: the source of my tranquillity.
I saw the tree on which our names were carved and thought of how we smiled, merging our joint destinies: in you was everything I sought. You saved me from myself at last, granting me my self-belief, but strengthened by your blind support, I let myself new conquests find, each one of which you forgave till I exhausted all your faith: I was man lost to himself, abandonment posed as bravery, who fled from purpose, or any sense of dignity.
You married someone else, I hear, and lived the life you offered me, while I walked on a thousand miles, reflecting my dreams are scarred by grief.
Man may travel without rest, seeking for his Promised Land, that sacred place where gentle souls discover peace of mind. I have not reached that place, I know, so journey on without respite, walking with people much like me, who drift through life in search of hope.
I am as lost as man can be, I cannot call it otherwise, but somewhere in my secret place, safe from harm or casual glance, you sometimes raise your eyes to me.
This reads like a poem, Peter – very touching.

Thank you very much. I think because its just his thoughts and reflections. That’s my excuse anyway. Happy New Year to You 🙂

I am deeply touched by this sensitive rendition Peter. It does seem to be written as prose/poetry
but what matters is, it does sing from the heart.
We are all lost at times and dream of that glance, that hand holding ours.

Nicely crafted writing – it is easy to picture your lead contemplating his life. Perhaps, however, he is one of those souls who find comfort in being lost: the security of being an outsider and never having to commit to another. Just thinking out loud here. A pleasure, as ever, to read, Peter.

I loved this, a piece that reads as a combination of prose and poetry as his mind reflects and remembers. Happy New Year to you.

There is surely something bittersweet about remembrances of “might have beens.” We enjoy reliving the contentment we found in them until the pain inevitably rises up to assault the memory. But only you could relate it so eloquently.

I came across an excellent British movie from 1949 — Poet’s Pub. I pride myself on knowing old movies, especially British ones, but this one had eluded me. We loved it — some familiar faces as well as a few I didn’t know. Excellent dialogue. I thought of you because you are my favourite (living) English poet. If you can track it down watch it. Thank you for all the enjoyment you have given us this year. Next year, I would like to hear that you have found a new publisher and that you are forging ahead with new projects — maybe even an audiobook version of your work so far? This has been one of the best Christmas’s ever for me and I hope that your’s has been wonderful. Terry

Thank you for a lovely comment and for all your support this year. My Christmas was not too bad despite the fact that I cooked the turkey!! I looked up that film and the cast is first class and the plot interesting so I will try and track it down. Hope you have the very best 2018. Us writer chaps always need a bit of luck and I’m hoping mine can only be fitted in a big package, as will yours I trust. 🙂
